Thriving Ivory Live!

On Thursday February 19th, the guys from Thriving Ivory stopped by my work to put on a little showcase.

Riding the wave that is their huge success from their hit "Angels on the Moon", the band has been getting millions of views on YouTube, thousands of spins on national radio, and selling out venues across the US.

The boys stopped by to play a few songs including "Angels on the Moon", "Hey Lady" and "Twilight". Listening to Clayton Stroppe's voice, it is hard to tell if he really has that unique captivating voice or if he is trying to sound like that. Nevertheless, it is a great sound.

Delta Spirit - Double Door on Valentine's Day

Rounder Records asked me to attend the Delta Spirit show at the Double Door in Chicago on Valentine's Day and I did not hesitate.

I have been a big fan of Delta Spirit for quite some time now, but never got a chance to see them live. For those of you who do not know Delta Spirit, they are hybrid of rock and southern soul and hail from San Diego California. The group incorporates unconventional instruments (such as trash cans lids and orchestral bass drums), the multi-instrumentalism of the members and the vocal delivery and religiously/spiritually-themed lyrics of singer Matt Vasquez. The group consists of Jon Jameson (bassist), Brandon Young (percussionist), Matthew Vasquez (vocalist), Sean Walker (guitarist), and Kelly Winrich (multi-instrumentalist). They remind me a lot of the Cold War Kids!

Now I have been to the Double Door several times since it is literally in my backyard, but never have I seen the place so packed. It may have been a chilly 30 degrees outside, but inside there was a heat wave as warm bodies fought for space. The band took the stage to some funky rap music and set the tone for what was to be a high-energy show. Matt Vasquez's vocals are beyond badass. When he sings, you can hear the passion stream from his vocal chords and you can't help but get wrapped up in the music. At one point, the crowd was so into it and jumping up and down so hard, the floor felt like a trampoline and I thought I was going to be launched on stage.

After the guys finished up their encore, Matt jumped into the crowd and formed a dancing circle. Talk about a fun guy!

All of their music sounds great, but highlights include "Trashcan", "Streetwalker", and "People, Turn Around".

Check out a picture of Matt and me along with some pics and a video from the show.

Hot New Album - Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You

On February 10th, 2009, the spunky little Brit named Lily Allen released her sophomore album It's Not Me, It's You. Allen, who is the British equivalent to America's Britney Spears, has been eating up the tabloids and saying what most kids in the early twenties do, except cameras follow her every move. From smoking pot to having sex, Allen never leaves the media searching for a quote. On top of that, several pictures of Lily drunk off her ass coming out of award ceremonies or local pubs litter the spreads of magazines. She sure is a wild child.

Luckily for Allen though, her music makes up for her "immature" behavior.

I first heard about Allen a few years back when her first album Alright, Still hit MySpace. Songs like "Smile" and "LDN" were very popular making her an overnight success on both sides of the pond. This Capitol Records artist sold over 3,300,000 copies worldwide. Not too shabby, but hard to follow up.

But so far so good. It's Not You, It's Me begins right where Alright, Still ended and takes it to the next level. "We decided to try and make bigger sounding, more ethereal songs, real songs," says Lily. Songs like "The Fear", "Everyone's At It" and "Fuck You" are the most catchy of the bunch and will help Lily sell millions again.

So go purchase this album! www.lilyallenmusic.com

Biggest Loser Competition - Week 5

Week 5 of the competition came and went and it turned out to be a bad week for me. After going up north for the annual ice fishing jamboree and eating an all-you-can eat fish fry, drinking like a freshman at college, and eating part of a 25 pound slab of bacon, I tipped the scale at a hearty 173.5. Yup, I gained weight this week. In fact, I gained the most weight of the group so I feel below the yellow line. But since I lost the most weight the week previous, I was exempt from paying. Thanks to the weight gods.

Oh well. Time to get back on the workout wagon.

Stay tuned til next week!

Biggest Loser Competition- Week 4

The fourth week of our Biggest Loser Competition is in the books and I came in at a trim 171!

I was afraid I would be paying this week since it was my birthday week and I had several parties and dinners to attend, but in the end I was the biggest loser!

So far, I have lost a total of 14.5 pounds equaling a loss of 7.82%.

Bad week to follow though with Ice Fishing Jamboree and wedding in Florida.
